A place to write an old name

The song note beside the telephone.

A scrap of paper could once hold a song someone wanted us to hear.

So the name would not be lost

The little notes beside a home telephone were not only for numbers. Sometimes the title of a song recommended by a friend landed there too. After the call, the paper might stay in a book, on a table or in a pocket. The song was not yet in our hands, but the intention to hear it remained.

The wait before listening

Today a written title can lead straight to a song. Earlier, finding it could take a little time. That wait could carry the face of the person who suggested it, their voice and the last moment of the conversation. Sometimes the song became a favourite; sometimes it did not. Yet the fact that someone chose it for us could stay in our memory.

A small ritual for today

Recommend a song to someone close. Instead of sending only a link, write its name and one short reason you chose it. Then ask how they felt after hearing it. Their answer need not match yours. A conversation about music can continue long after the music ends.
