A gathering in the dark
Antakshari during a power cut.
When the lights went out, conversation often grew a little louder.
The fan stopped; the talk began
A power cut could bring a different kind of quiet into a room. Someone opened a window, someone looked for a candle, and someone suggested going up to the terrace. It might not have been any cooler, but sitting together could make the wait feel shorter.
One letter, many memories
Antakshari needed no songbook. You only needed the last letter of one tune and a little time to remember the next. Someone forgot a melody, someone mixed up a film title, and everyone laughed. The pleasure was less about winning than recognising a song you had almost forgotten.
A listening ritual for today
Even with the lights on, set your phone aside for a while one evening. Listen to “Mere Pyar Ki Umar Ho Itnee Sanam” and ask someone close to you which song's opening notes they still remember. Whether an answer comes quickly or not, a conversation might begin.
