The slow evening

Rain, a cup of chai, and a little time.

A small evening ritual with nothing to achieve, only a little time to return to yourself.

Make a little room first

Sometimes the hardest part of an evening is leaving work behind. The laptop is shut, but another list is still running in your mind. Write that list on a piece of paper and set it aside. Then find a seat by a window, on a balcony, or in a quiet corner of your home. Even without rain, this evening can belong to you.

Let the chai take its time

Make the chai you usually drink. You do not need a new recipe. Add ginger if you like ginger, or cardamom if that is your choice. Put your phone aside while the water heats and the tea reaches your cup. Notice the warmth of the cup, the smell from the kitchen, and the soft sound of the spoon. A little attention can turn an everyday task into a small ritual.

Room for three songs

Instead of planning a whole night of music, choose just three songs. Begin with one you already love. Pick another you have not heard in a long time. Let the third be a favourite of a friend or someone at home. You can leave a little silence between them. You do not have to play the next song at once; sometimes one melody is enough for the evening.

One line for yourself

At the end, write one line: what did I remember today? Do not look for a grand answer. You may think of the walk home from school or the chai someone made for you. You may remember nothing in particular. This diary is not meant to impress anyone. It gives the small parts of your life a little space.

Pass the evening along

If someone comes to mind, send them a song and one sentence of your own. Tell them why you chose it instead of sending only a link. It is all right if they do not reply immediately. Some messages are simply a way of letting someone know they were remembered.
