A little light at dusk

A small lamp by the door.

Sometimes a little light does not fill a room. It simply shows the way back inside.

One place for the light

Our picture of an old home need not be a large courtyard or a bright room. Sometimes what stays with us is a little light near the door. At dusk it shows the edge of the threshold; that can be enough to feel that everything inside is in its place. This is not an account of one particular home. It is a reflection on the familiar habit of letting the house grow a little quieter after a busy day.

Slowing down is an act too

Our eyes pause before a small flame. In much the same way, an old song can give us a few minutes to listen more slowly. If we do not hurry to pick the next track before this one ends, we may hear the sounds around its melody too: a cup being set down, air coming through a window, a conversation in another room. We do not need an old photograph to remember a pause like that.

A listening ritual for today

Listen to “Dheere Jalna”. If it feels safe this evening, lower a bright room light or sit near a window. There is no need to light a candle or lamp. After the song, pause for a moment and notice which small light at home feels most familiar. Sometimes memories return from a place no larger than that.
