Little everyday rituals
A little chai corner at home.
You do not need new furniture to give an everyday pause a place of its own.
Start with what you have
A chair, somewhere to put a cup, and a little light are enough. If there is no space by a window, a corner of the dining table or a chair on the balcony will do. Try sitting there for a week before deciding whether to buy anything.
One tray, less fuss
Keeping a cup, coaster, and small notebook on a tray makes the space easy to set up. Place hot chai on a stable surface, away from your phone and electrical devices. In a small home, nothing needs a permanent place. Put the tray away afterward; the same ritual can begin again tomorrow.
Choose one thing that is yours
A postcard, a photograph you took, or a copy of an old train ticket can make the corner feel familiar. Pick something you like, rather than something that merely makes the room look good in a photo. If others at home use the space, invite them to choose a small object too. Slowly it can become a shared memory, not one person’s design project.
Let sound be company
Sometimes listen closely to one song; sometimes just talk. Whether you use a speaker or a phone, keep the volume low enough for an easy conversation nearby. A new gadget is not a condition of this ritual. First notice what you enjoy doing there: listening, reading, sketching, or simply looking outside.
A small rule for your gumti
Choose a rule that suits you: no email with the first cup, perhaps, or a family favourite on Sundays. If the rule slips, begin again tomorrow. This corner is not another routine to perfect. It is a place where, for a little while, you can simply be.
